DiscoveryLand is designed for children age three through those in 5th grade. Plymouth also offers an Early DiscoveryLand program for two-year-olds, a Nursery for our youngest children, and a Teen Ministry for Middle and High School students in grades 6-12.
DiscoveryLand meets on Sunday mornings during the worship service. Children first begin the service with their parents and then, following the Children's Sermon, they are led by DiscoveryLand teachers to classrooms in the Church House. After the worship service, DiscoveryLand classes are brought to Fellowship Hour by their teachers. DiscoveryLand Curriculum
Our curriculum emphasizes play-filled, hands-on learning. Old Testament stories and the teachings of Jesus from the New Testament are brought to life through dramatic play, songs and group activities. Major Church holidays, such as Advent, Lent and Easter, are celebrated with special craft projects and games, and the annual Christmas pageant is a DiscoveryLand highlight. In the summer, many of our children participate in Vacation Bible Camp.
DiscoveryLand Staff
The DiscoveryLand classes are taught by knowledgeable and experienced volunteers from our congregation. Julia Rassmann, Director of the Ministry to Families and Children, designs the curriculum with input from Children’s Christian Education volunteers and supervises staffing. (Note: Spending time with our children as a DiscoveryLand teacher or assistant is one of the most joyous and fulfilling ways to serve the mission of Plymouth. Please consider joining us!)
Early DiscoveryLand
Two-year-olds have their own special opportunity for family time and Christian-based learning during the Sunday service. “Early DiscoveryLand” children, accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver, enjoy structured play with a volunteer group leader. As with older DiscoveryLand children, they begin the service with their families, then move to their classroom after the Children’s Sermon.
Sunday Nursery
Infant and toddler care is provided free-of-charge every Sunday for children from age 8 weeks through 24 months. Children can be dropped off at the nursery between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (summer hours are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). Reservations are not required. Please note that at least one parent of a child must be on church premises at all times. Parents should bring a cell phone to enable contact during nursery care.
Getting Started
If you are interested in bringing your child to any of these Sunday programs, please contact Julia Rassmann, Director of the Ministry to Families and Children, during regular office hours. She will walk you through the Sunday schedule, answer questions about the DiscoveryLand curriculum and take down your pre-registration information. You can also discuss any special needs your child may have.
No reservations are required for Sunday programs. Drop-ins are fine, but for everyone’s security, children should be registered with Julia Rassmann as soon as it is convenient.
